Although in the long history in China our ancestors have concluded that a happy marriage should be built on certain material basis as one Chinese proverb goes, “Everything goes wrong for the poor couple” , people are still amazed at the stories telling true love like the Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. In recent years, an increasing number of Chinese young people have chosen a “naked marriage.” The term “Naked marriage” becomes one of the heated topics among the young people . It refers to a couple who get hitched without any major assets and who spend little on their wedding ceremony.
Recently one TV drama Naked Marriage Age has been poplar in China now. In this drama, Liu Yiyang, starred by Chinese Actor Wen Zhang, and Tong Jiaqian, starred by the actress Yao Di, got married without little material wealth after a nine-year relationship. Many young lovers before the TV screen are following their example. Some of them tied the knot at a cost of nine yuan, which was used to obtain the marriage certificate. The “naked marriage” is in sharp contrast with Chinas established marriage customs, which set the stereotype that parents should help the young couples lay the material basis to preparation their children a sweet marriage. However, with the time goes by, opinions have varied from person to person. The traditional opinions are actually facing challenges by the belief of the “Naked marriage. Prior to this years Chinese Valentines Day, the social investigation center of the China Youth Daily carried out a poll and the result showed that nearly 48 percent of 3,214 questioned said they supported the idea of “naked marriages,” while about 23 percent opposed it. Meanwhile the vote also showed that about 55 percent of the questioned regarded courage as necessary to sustain a naked marriage” and 43 percent of them agreed that married life of the couples involved in a naked marriage” would be much more difficult than other couples with better financial conditions while this does not necessarily mean that these couples are more likely to get divorced.
More and more people have accepted that love is a stronger force to guarantee a sweet marriage than money and those self-reliant couples believe that they can earn the material wealth with their own hands. According to them hose element such as apartments, diamond rings, cars etc which are viewed as necessities in happy marriages are not the key pursuits. Sociological experts said the gradual popularity of “naked marriage” showed the youngsters more open-minded attitude towards marriage.
